Distinguish entry into force from application

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 or PPWR, entered into force on 11 February 2025. Its general application date is 12 August 2026; individual obligations have separate deadlines.

Before approving a pack, ask the responsible importer or compliance reviewer which provisions and dates apply to the selected SKU and destination. The general date does not mean every obligation starts together, and this briefing is not a product-specific compliance determination.

What to put in the packaging brief

Identify the packaging components and their materials, including the bottle, closure or trigger, label and carton. Share the destination country, pack format, net content and retailer packaging requirements so the proposal can be reviewed against the actual order.

Before final artwork, confirm the relevant label languages, instructions, warnings and recycling information with the reviewer. Check barcode space, units per carton and carton marks with the buyer as well. A packaging checklist does not replace the destination-specific assessment.
